Join the Big Dance

On Sunday, April 29, 600 people will bust a move at Federation Square for the Big Dance on International Dance Day.

The Big Dance, hosted by dance company Ausdance, converges professional and amateur dancers from around Victoria for the big bi-annual event.

It aims to get more people moving and appreciating dancing through bringing the community together.

Participants can attend the free workshops led by professional dance instructors or watch online tutorials to learn the simple dance moves.

The community dance event originated from London in 2006 and has since spread across the world.

In 2014, Ausdance held the first Big Dance with more than 2000 participants performing in person and online at the Sydney Opera House.

The Big Dance is open to people from all ages, all abilities and all experiences.

The choreography this year is a five-minute contemporary Indigenous routine curated by acclaimed Indigenous choreographer Frances Rings and New Zealand dancer Craig Bary.

Independent artist Josh Twee from Ausdance is one of the dance instructors and workshop facilitators for the Big Dance.

He has been teaching the public the special choreography at studios in Collingwood and Sunshine.

This year, thousands of people will dance together at various locations in Victoria and Australia, including Federation Square, Melba Park in Lilydale, Victory Park in Castlemaine, Cathedral Square in Sydney and metro and regional locations in other states.

The public is welcome to watch the impressive group dance from 12-4pm on April 29, which is also International Dance Day.
