Judging by shows coming up, World Dance Day is now a week or more
At a time when debates on the use, misuse and abuse of the body as a commodity rage across the world, the art of dance is an undeniably important component of culture in helping to promote harmony at many levels. India is rich in dance arts and while the renaissance of the classical forms during the pre- and post-independence period is a celebrated chapter of history, it is not easy to say how much an understanding and acceptance of dance as a secure career has seeped into society. India is a big country and even a minority commands big numbers so there is no doubt that dance has become a popular pastime. World Dance Day, supported by the International Dance Council of UNESCO, began in 1982. Over approximately a decade, the day has become increasingly popular as a medium to reiterate the relationship between dancers and their art and between dancers and their public.
Bharatanatyam dancer Geeta Chandran has been celebrating the day since 2005 with both performances and relevant discussions. This Saturday, the events begin at 3.30 at the India International Centre Main Auditorium with an open-house seminar on a topic that occupies many: “What Is Classical Anymore?” The keynote address will be delivered by eminent scholar Dr. Kapila Vatsyayan. Senior gurus like Singhajeet Singh, Jamuna Krishnan, Shovana Narayan and Ranjana Gauhar will be present, joined by a panel of young dancers.
The same evening, the Natya Vriksha Young Dancers’ Fest opens, featuring Koodiyattam by Kalamandalam Sangeeth and Kathak by Swati Sinha. On day 2, April 28, 6.30 p.m., young Aditi Balasubramanian presents Bharatanatyam, followed by Sattriya by Anwesa Mahanta. All events are open to the public. Entry is free.
Meanwhile, Kalashram celebrates the day at the Azad Bhawan auditorium of the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, at IP Estate with another open event starting from the afternoon of April 28. At 2 p.m. there will be a quiz on “Dance for body and mind”. This will be followed at 4 p.m. by a discussion on “Dance — a celebration of life”. After tea come the evening presentations by classical, folk, contemporary and popular dance groups starting at 6.
And at the India Habitat Centre, there is a whole week of celebrations presented by Spandan, conceived and executed by R. Sreenivasan, a motivational speaker and photographer.
A large format photo exhibition comprising 16 compilations of different world dance forms from his collection has been put up in the open spaces of IHC. The week ends with an evening of world dance on May 3. Celebrated performing arts photographer Avinash Pasricha will speak about his career in the field with dance critic and author Leela Venkataraman, dancer Geeta Chandran and curator Alka Pande. There will also be performances by five dancers from different countries: eight dance forms.
Another organisation engaged in celebrating the event over the past few years is Kaladarppanam, a Rohini-based centre for Bhartanatyam founded by Sunita Menon. Evading the calendar rush, Kaladarppanam’s World Dance Day will be observed on Sunday, May 5 at 6.30 p.m. at LTG Auditorium, Copernicus Marg, Mandi House.
As for Spic Macay, the body that has been trying to enthuse youngsters about Indian classical and other traditional art forms for several decades through programmes in schools and colleges, it too has decided to mark the international day dedicated to the art. But with its volume of events, Spic Macay’s schedule started on April 8. With various eminent dancers performing at schools across the NCR, those performing on April 29 include veteran Uma Sharma at Modern School, Barakhamba Road, Shovana Narayan at Tagore International, Rama Vaidyanathan (Vasant Valley). Odissi veteran Kiran Segal visits DPS Vasundhara on April 30, while young exponent Arushi Mudgal goes to Uttam School for Girls, Ghaziabad, on May 7 and Mahua Shankar introduces students of ITL Public School, Dwarka, on May 8.
Every serious dancer would agree dance is as much about the body as the mind, because that is what communication is all about. With the innumerable dance forms the world possesses, that means a lot of potential understanding. Now it just needs to fit into the mind space of those who martial priorities in a world that seems constantly engaged in turning a deaf ear to others’ interests.

Dancing away to divinity
It was a real celebration of dance as young artistes of the Natya Vriksha Dance School enthralled the Capital with a two-day dance festival on the occasion of World Dance Day recently.
Spread over April 28 and 29, the festival included a film screening, a seminar and a bouquet of four varied dance performances to charm those present.
The festival, in its sixth year now, was held in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sangeet Natak Akademi, NTPC and UNESCO at the IIC.
Speaking on the occasion, Natya Vriksha founder-director dancer Geeta Chandran said, “The World Dance Day may be celebrated across the globe but it is special to India. Not only do people enjoy dancing here but even the Gods patronise this art.
We have many different and yet equally impressive, dance forms here, ranging from temple classical to tribal and now also contemporary. India is the abode of dance. I feel it is essential to continue encouraging youngsters interested in learning this art and keeping our heritage alive for centuries to come.”
In the spirit of Geeta’s words, the festival began with the screening of Lasya Kavya - this year’s National Award winner in the best Art and Culture Film category, based on the life of acclaimed Bharatnatyam dancer Alarmel Valli.
This 80 minute long film directed by Sankalp Meshram, gave an inspiring narration on Alarmel’s passion for dance through the voices of her fans - the greatest being Zubin Mehta, India’s best known Western classical music composer.
This was followed by an enchanting Kathakali performance by this year’s Sangeet Natak Akademi ‘Ustad Bismillah Khan Yuva Puraskar’ awardee Kalamandalam Amaljith supported by Deepa Ramakrishnan. They presented an episode from Bhagwat Puran called Daksh Yagam.
In this piece, Daksh and his wife, in Sringar ras, go to bathe in a river and the queen spots a beautiful conch shell resting on a lotus flower. Daksh goes to fetch it for her and as soon as he lifts the conch, it turns into beautiful baby girl Sati. Amaljith as Daksh showed extraordinary grace as a hero in love who then becomes the father of a child.
The second day of the fest began with a mesmerising Bharatanatyam performance by young dancers Satyapriya Iyer and Christopher Gurusamy from Kalakshetra- the renowned school of dance in Chennai.
They presented a varnam in ragam Anand Bhairavi. In the varnam the dancers portrayed the pain of the nayika on being separated from her Lord with typical Kalakshetra precision. Their tillana was the ‘dance of joy’ and a fitting conclusion to their presentation.
Lastly, Monisa Nayak presented Kathak in the Jaipur gharana style showcasing the finer aspects of teen taal layakari and abhinaya to a ghazal.
On a concluding note, Geeta expressed, “Such festivals provide young dancers with a valuable opportunity to present their art. I am glad Natya Vriksha is serving that purpose through gala events and people are encouraging youngsters by coming to witness their accomplishments.”

A short synopsis of “Vividh Mat” is given below:
“Vividh-Mat: Perceptions”
Perception is sensory experience of the world involving both the recognition of environmental stimuli and actions in response to these stimuli. It varies from individual to individual. New insight can replace old assumptions as new understanding sprouts and new curiosity takes over.
“Vividh-Mat” seeks to explore range of perceptions on two issues as follows:
(i) “Dharma -Adharma” (26th April, 2016): What hue does ethics, which in itself is more concerned with the moral conduct, don in the necessity for survival and maintenance of a social group or social order or the individual’s existence? (ii) “Can the Twain Meet” (27th April, 2016): Inspired by Rudyard Kipling’s well-known ballad, the discussion seeks to open various vistas where differences and accidents of thoughts, philosophies and cultures may or may not become meaningless.
Details of Dance Pieces:
Karna Kunti Samvaad (26th April, 2016): (premiered in 1986):
This piece from Chapter 5 of Dinkar’s celebrated work ‘Rashmirathi’ presents the poignancy of Karna and Kunti with all hues of human emotions trapped in moral dilemmas. Kunti, a mother who had abandoned her son Karna at birth, but knowing fully well Karna’s unmatched prowess in the art of warfare, now seeks Karna’s assistance in the battle against the Kauravas at the hour of approaching battle. Where was she, Karna asks in pain, when he, despite being noble born, had had to face the ridicule of society for being brought up as a lowly person’s son? Why should he turn against his benefactor, the Kauravas, who not only gave him shelter but also respect and honour?
Outspoken, acerbic, and unambiguous in his condemnation of her actions, past and present, and even though foreseeing a defeat for the Kauravas, Karna declines Kunti’s request to cross sides. He however, offers Kunti the consolation that he will not kill all her sons: he will either kill Arjuna or be killed by him, so that she will still remain the mother of five sons! He says that the war is quite pointless yet it is a destiny that has to be fulfilled.
Et la Lune of Debussy (27th April, 2016): (premiered in 1993):
It is usually thought that Indian Classical dance and Western Classical Music can never meet. In this music piece where the mood is of moonlit night, an Indian folk tale of the harsingar blooming at night in pure Kathak movements and costumes speaks that “The Twain Can Meet”.
“Yudhisthar and Draupadi” (27th April, 2016): (premiered in 1997):
The broad story of Mahabharata is well-known. Draupadi, the Princess of Panchala, is won by Arjun, the archer par excellence among the five Pandava brothers. But Draupadi, against her will has to marry all five Pandava brothers, because Kunti, her mother-in-law, not knowing that her sons had brought Draupadi with them, pronounced the words written in stone: ‘All of you enjoy what has been obtained’.
Yudhishtar, the eldest of the five brothers, was the first to be with Draupadi, even though Arjun had won her and she was prepared only to marry him.
Pavan K.Varma’s book explores the fascinating relationship between Yudhishtar and Draupadi. Draupadi was not like most of the other women of her time – submissive and yielding. How did she react to Yudhishtar, and why did Yudhishtar, sober and reticent by personality and inclination, fanatically gamble away all his Kingdom and wealth, and, last of all, his own wife, Draupadi?
Based on a long poem written by Mr. Pavan K.Varma, the theme breathes of passions and dilemmas between Draupadi and her husband Yudhishthar. We follow Yudhishthar to the still pool of death where, by answering philosophic questions posed by the Yaksha, in reality his father, Dharma. Kaunteya brings back his Pandav brothers to life.
The primary concern however is the trouble between a woman, Draupadi, and a man, her ‘first’ husband Yudhisthar. Arjun won her, Dharmaputra gambled her away. But Arjun had Subhadra and Bhim, Hidimba. Who did Yudhisthar have? No one but Panchali. But how did Draupadi think of Kaunteya?
